Four years after the acquisition of Zynga, she officially confirmed that the Echtra Games studio, known for the Torchlight 3 isometric roe, stops its work. As reported in the statement sent to the editor IGNClosing takes place as part of a revision of strategy and priorities.
Echtra Games was founded in 2016 by the industry veteran Max Schater, who previously participated in the creation of Diablo in Blizzard North and the original Torchlight in Runic Games. The studio originally worked on Torchlight Frontiers-an ambitious multiplayer version of the series-however, in 2020, after the from players and internal discussions, the project was converted to Torchlight 3, more traditional solitary Action-RPG.
Unfortunately, Torchlight 3 failed to repeat the success of the previous parts. The first game of the 2009 series left a vivid impression as an easy, but atmospheric role action, and the third part turned out to be technically stable, but little of interest against the background of competitors. The mechanics inherited from the original Free-to-Play-models caused associations with mobile games and were perceived as inappropriate.
Less than six months after Torchlight 3, the studio was acquired by Zynga, which then sought to expand its presence outside the mobile market. Echtra was supposed to be engaged in the development of the cross -platform RPG in cooperation with NaturalMotion, but the project never went beyond the announcement.
Echtra’s closure occurred shortly after the cancellation of Star Wars: NaturalMotion Hunters-another Zynga Studio-and the total reduction in Take-Two Interactive’s maternal company by 5% in April 2024. Then the publishing house got rid of the Private Division unit, known for the of independent games. All this indicates the continuing restructuring of Take-Two, especially against the background of the recent transfer of Grand Theft Auto 6 in the spring of 2026.
